Strand Athletes Reach Borough Finals
Last Friday we took our indoor athletics team to the Hounslow Borough Finals at Osterley sports hall. 14 qualifiers from across the borough had the opportunity to compete against the best of the best. Getting off to a strong start was important and Strand finished second in their opening 2 races (obstacle relay for both boys and girls). We then looked like we were going to win the 1x1 boys sprint but a little mix up at handover cost us and we finished 2nd again. The girls 1x1 relay followed this trend too. A noticeable pattern was emerging as we kept on finishing second in our heat to Fairholme. Really good times were being recorded but victories in races proved elusive. Onto the field events and, again, we performed to our very best with the 'Strand Values' in evidence. Our teams were cheering each other on and athletes were giving hints and last minute advice to team mates. A fab time was had by all and the team especially enjoyed watching the teacher's race where Mr. A finished a creditable 2nd (behind a former sprinter for Hounslow Athletics team and current sprint coach to Team Hounslow!). We managed to finish a creditable 5th place in the borough overall as teams in other heats recorded very fast times too, evidently. A huge well done to the team. They were a credit to the school in their efforts and competitive nature.
P.S. Some may recall young JJ Wilson and Aiden Aherne starring for Strand when we won this competition 4 years ago. Well, JJ has now won the National Schools triple jump crown for Team Hounslow and Aiden broke the club's 800m junior record! Well done to our Strand alumni!
