Governing Body

We aim to be a ‘critical friend’.There are 15 members of Strand Juniors Governing Body. Governors collaborate with the school in its work to provide a challenging, safe and exciting learning environment for all of our children. The Governing Body works with the Senior Leadership Team to establish the School Development Plan and approves this, the annual budget and internal policies. We ensure that our policies meet central and local authority requirements. We also monitor the implementation of our policies and we conduct appeals, senior staff appointments and consider serious disciplinary decisions. We abide by our Code of Conduct.

To achieve this, Governors:

  • Meet as a whole body termly to talk about the work of the school.
  • Visit some of the excellent performances, assemblies and exhibitions that children and staff have produced.
  • Respond to national issues such as the reduced funding to schools and the new OFSTED framework.
  • Meet with OFSTED and other inspectors.
  • Read through documentation and policies.
  • Ask questions about achievement and attainment, the curriculum and the financial management of the school.
  • Support the school to improve standards for all children.
  • Ensure that our pupils and staff learn and work in a healthy and safe environment.
  • Go in to class to look at what is being learnt and taught.
  • Keep parents/carers and the school community informed.

In addition, 4 separate committees meet termly – the Achievement and Standards looking at aspects of teaching and learning: the Finance and Premises looking at the financial management of the school and its premises: The Swan Centre who, jointly with the Infant School, manage the work of the center and the Safeguarding and Well-being committee looking at the health and well being of the school.

Our Governing Body was praised in the October 2016 Ofsted inspection. Ofsted said that “The school has a skilled group of Governors” and we "hold the school to account well" whilst "challenging the leaders using school performance information".
