Our curriculum, which follows the national curriculum, reflects Strand's context and has been developed to provide our children with the basic skills and firm foundations of knowledge they need for the next stage of their education.
With opportunities to grapple with big questions like "Were the Dark Ages really Dark?", practice basic skills until they become automatic and read widely, Strandites are well equipped for all they face in the future.
The framework below provides an overview of what your children will learn during their time with us. Each theme will have a main focus; history, science or geography but will involve other subjects, including art, DT, computing and PSHE, within the theme.
A more detailed breakdown of what you will learn each year, including the core areas of maths, reading and writing, can be found on the curriculum pages for each year group: Year 3, Year 4, Year 5 or Year 6.
Maths and English are taught as discrete subjects, with carefully considered sequences of learning which give children opportunity to master key skills and develop fluency. We use a UK adapted version of ‘Singapore Maths’ as the core of our Maths curriculum. This approach promotes the mathematical thinking skills necessary to solve problems.
Investing in sport we have a dedicated PE team, led by our specialist teacher, who organise competitive inter house events to include all children while entering our elite sportsmen into local competitions developing team spirit and good sportsmanship in all.
Passionate about music, we also have a specialist music teacher who teaches singing and djembe across the school while all children in Year 4 learn a brass instrument. Our choir regularly sing in the Hounslow Summer Festival and other local events. We partner with Hounslow Music service to provide a wide range of instrument tuition from guitar to saxophone.
We are committed to educating children to have healthy lifestyles and we are proud to have achieved our Healthy School Mark, Outstanding Travel Planning Award and Gold Bike IT award. We encourage children to walk or cycle to school and make sure there are plenty of opportunities for exercise with the Daily Dash, Active AM and a plethora of after school clubs.
