Year 6

Welcome to Year 6

Year 6 have had a very busy Spring and Summer term cramming in a History topic, trips to Devon, SAT’s and a show to name but a few! Here is a taster of all the great things they have been working on.

Britain since the 1930s

We launched our topic with a WW2 museum in school. We got the chance to investigate a range of WW2 artefacts as well as the Strand on the Green junior school log books from the time! The school children were evacuated and the building was put to use as a warehouse!

We used this topic to learn all about journalistic writing and having worked hard in literacy groups we joined together in class and created our own WW2 newspapers. Click on the links below to read all about it!

In addition to this we also wrote some war poetry, where some of us really found our writing niche, capturing the characteristics and emotion of war through some powerful words.

Having learnt about life in the 1930’s the children got to research their chosen decade of the 1900’s in ICT carousel. Click on the links below to have a look.

Knapp House

Knapp House

After the stressful week of SATs the children and the Year 6 staff plus a few other willing volunteers headed off to Devon to spend the week at Knapp House. Each day the children participated in a range of activities including surfing, canoeing and abseiling! Click on the links below to read about what some of the children thought about their week away.

Mini-Fair

After the summer half-term the children launched into their preparations for the Mini-Fair, creating business plans, risk assessments and budgets for the stalls they would be running. This year saw a range of imaginative and creative stalls, including a beauty salon, grasshopper rugby and pie throwing. Needless to say some of the Year 6’s ended up quite wet and messy! The fair was a great success not only raising money for the School Trips Fund but providing the Year 2’s with a glimpse of life in the Juniors!

Mamma Mia!

To finish there time off at Strand, the Year 6 children put on a performance of a ‘Strandised’ Mamma Mia! Following the auditions, four weeks of hard work ensued, the children singing, dancing and acting during any spare moment. With the help of lots of staff at school the children put on an amazing performance which had the parents on their feet signing and dancing with them! Congratulations Year 6, it was a show that will never be forgotten.

If you didn’t get round to ordering your copy of the DVD or photographs, then pop into the office next term – we still have copies available.

Many weeks of hard work in ICT carousel (and a little help from Ms Woods!) resulted in a fantastic Yearbook for Year 6 to remember their time at Strand. For anyone who didn’t get a paper copy just click on the link above to download it.
