Year 4 Newsletter No.2 - 08/01/10

During the Spring Term Year 4 learnt about the Tudors as part of their History focus. They really enjoyed learning about the Tudors and incorporated lots into their learning including Literacy and Art. They also went to visit Hampton Court for the day and were lucky enough to meet some of Henry VIII wives, who told them their story!

Tudor Times

To launch our Tudor history topic we were invited, as journalists, to King Henry VIII’s 50th birthday party. We were lucky enough to interview King Henry’s cook, Nancy, who gave us incite into what he liked to eat and how he treated his servants.

Hans Holbein was also a guest at the party because he had painted a portrait of the King for his birthday.

Cameron’s Hans Holbein report

Last but not least, we had the privilege of interviewing King Henry himself! As journalists we asked him about his family and what he enjoyed doing. We were surprised to find out that he liked playing tennis, dancing, hunting and playing musical instruments.

‘I liked King Henry’s clothes and he sent someone to get their head chopped off because they were talking’ by Kai.

The Reformation

We also learnt about the reformation and what it meant to be a Tudor person during that time.

‘The reformation was when King Henry VIII wanted to divorce Catherine of Aragon, but the Pope would not let him, so he said that England was no longer a Catholic country but now a protestant country. People who did not want to become protestant were arrested and even beheaded!’ By Ruslan 4F

Hampton court

To enrich our learning we had a trip to Hampton court palace, where King Henry used to live.

‘I loved the trip. If I was in Tudor times I would love to live or work there’ by Jacob 4F.

To finish our topic we had a Tudor day. We came dressed as the Tudor person that we researched for our homework project.

‘I enjoyed learning about the Tudors. It was really exciting when we had a mini cat walk for our Tudor day. It was also cool that we had to dress up as Tudors.’ By Billie 4F.

DT and Literacy: Designing and advertising a trainer

We investigated the persuasive features in adverts in our Literacy lessons then designed our own trainers in DT as part of our ‘Keeping Healthy’ project.

Here are some of our results:
