Welcome to Year 3

Year 3 Newsletter No.2 - 13/01/10

Well done to all for a super start to life in Year 3!  We have all really enjoyed getting to know our new ‘Strandites’.  We have started our ‘Passports to the Juniors’, focusing on the skills and attitudes that will help our learning.

Each child now knows if they are in red, green, blue or yellow team.  Keep a look out for inter-house competitions throughout the year.  These include football and netball competitions, a quiz and a swimming gala.  Remember to record any team-points you are given so we can total them each week and announce the results in our achievement assembly each week.

Super School Council
Well done to all who put themselves forward for being elected to our school council.  It was great to see how much effort you had put into the task and you were so confident to share your ideas.  Well done to Patrick Quinn, Beth Thomson and Jaden Narh who have been elected as our school council representatives.  Class councils have also started.  We certainly appreciate pupil voice and know that many great decisions will be made!

Marvellous Musicians

This year we are very fortunate to have the expertise of Mr Goodall and Mr Neill from the Hounslow Music Service working with each Year 3 class.  3R have started this term and each child is learning to play the clarinet, horn or trombone!  Even after only a few lessons we can see super progress and can’t wait to share our new skills with you all.

Tourist Office
To link with our ‘Your World, My World’ theme we researched different countries and then wrote non-chronological reports.  We wanted to share our learning with others so invited other year groups to pop into our classrooms/ tourists offices.  Every visitor was clearly impressed by the amount of information that we could share and how confident and enthusiastic we were.  It was a great opportunity to reflect on our learning.

“At first I felt a little bit nervous but Angelica and I worked together.”  Leah 3R

“Glenae helped me to do it and then I did not feel scared and I did it!”  Jasmine 3R

“It helped my learning as I was focusing on my work.”  Chante 3R

“I was nervous but the Jesse told me something which made me laugh and I was alright.”  Anna 3N

“I enjoyed the experience because I learnt in a different way. We used props, like toy phones, to help us.”  Zoe 3N

“I liked the travel agents experience because I shared my learning with my friends from other year groups.” Tyreek 3N

“I enjoyed experimenting with finding things out in different ways like going on Espresso or looking in books.” Jaden N 3F

“I liked working in a group and with a grown-up. We told the Year Six children things they didn’t know before.” Gillian 3F

Super Settings
We have written some brilliant descriptions of familiar settings.  We realised how helpful it was to use our senses when building up the detail.  We hope you enjoy these examples of the descriptions we wrote after visiting the Year 6 garden.

In the garden the clouds were playing in the sky.  There was a butterfly in the garden.  I saw a gigantic spider.  Then I saw an honesty plant with the small plastic leaves and the seeds.  After that I heard the very fast train pass the garden.
Bartosz 3R

It was a beautiful day in the garden.  The sun was blazing down as we looked around.  There were some lovely red, white, purple and pink flowers.  As I was looking I felt the refreshing air flowing through my hair.  There was a bee buzzing loudly as he sucked the nectar out of the colourful flowers.  The green smooth leaves were swaying in the breeze of the wind.  I heard the sound of people sawing wood and the table creaking loudly.  Siobhan 3R

The cool garden was full of plants and shiny, smooth leaves.  A robin was hopping from branch to branch in a tree.  The fluffy white clouds hung in the sky like teddy bears against the warming brown colour of the garden wall.
Phoebe A   3N

The garden had a wonderful rosemary smell.  As we walked through a train whooshed past in a blur.  Just after that a robin jumped out on the freezing autumn afternoon.  Most of the garden was overgrown, the leaves had fallen from the trees and the ground was muddy.
Ruben 3N

Leaves rustled in the garden and I saw a huge spider.  Beautiful birds were tweeting happily in the trees and I could smell the sweet rosemary tickling my nose.  We saw a brown shed and wasps buzzing around.
Beth 3F

In the garden we smelt delicious colourful flowers and felt wet, soggy leaves because the season is autumn.  The weather was cloudy but the sun was peeking through a bit.  We saw worms moving slowly and heard the large leaves rustling.
Dan 3F

‘Your World, My World’ Continued
Each class received an unusual letter prompting them to go and look for information about different countries around the school!  3R’s clues were about Russia, 3F’S Brazil and 3N’s India.  We then mixed up the classes so that we could pass on information to each other.  This started our comparison between the lives of children in these countries and our own.

Year 4 visiting our Living Museum.

We certainly have co-operated well to prepare and present the information.

We made food for our banquets and decided on the entertainment that would amaze our guests.

Year 3 Romans Theme

This term our theme has been the Romans. We have really enjoyed finding out about this fascinating topic! During our launch we had a visit from Emperor Risticus who set the challenge of setting the history records straight about the Romans. All of our learning this term has been leading to a living museum, where year 3 invited other year groups to share their learning. It was a great success and certainly proved just how many super skills had been gained as well as so much knowledge.

During the term we visited the Museum of London. Thank you to all involved with our super trip. Such a great day was had by all and it was amazing to see real Roman artefacts! The day really inspired us when we were setting up our own museum. We would definitely recommend that you visit this fantastic museum. Ask us for more details about how to get there and what you can do when you are there.

Thank you to all of the adults and children who helped us prepare for our Roman banquets. The food and entertainment were superb. We had drummers and jugglers and many other amazing acts. This ensured that our guests were completely satisfied!

We got the chance to wear our Roman sandals that we had made in DT too. We had researched various different sandal designs and chosen materials to use that best fit the purpose. Our sewing skills certainly progressed well with a little practice and lots of patience!

3F whisked us back in time to Roman Britain in their class assembly. It was a real treat to see such great confidence and teamwork.

Year 3 have started their weekly swimming lessons at Brentford Fountain Leisure Centre. We are so proud of the progress that has been made in just a few weeks! Thank you to all of the parents and carers who have been walking us to the pools and getting us used to our new routines.

World Book Day was a super opportunity to celebrate our love of reading. We really enjoyed sharing our favourite stories with year 5. It was great fun working out the different characters arrived in year 3 that day, from James Bond to Milly Molly Mandy!

We have been writing alternative traditional stories. It has been so great to see how we are using what we read to help us to develop our writing skills. Chyna in 3R really impressed us with her super opening to her story.

Once upon a time there lived a girl called Kate. Kate was a kind and friendly person. Her and her family loved scuba diving but there was one problem that was holding her back- her lazy old brothers and her dad of course! Everyday Ben and Tom practised scuba diving but poor old Kate had to work hard to clean everything in the house. While Ben and Tom were outside having fun, Kate was upstairs crying.

One day Kate came downstairs. She caught a glimpse of a gleaming envelope…

Otto ‘s magic section of his story certainly had us gripped and wanting to read on to find out how the story was resolved.

When the day of the competition came the brothers rushed down the stairs. They swiftly got into their lovely car. When Ben and Jack went off Jo was left crying on the sofa. Suddenly, out of nowhere, a fairy godmother came out of the poster.

“You shall go to Wembley!”
“But I can’t! I haven’t got the things I need.”

Then the fairy godmother turned the sofa into a limo, a hat into a mask and his slippers into boots.

“Now, you have to be back by twelve"
