Our Approach to the Curriculum

We offer a broad and balanced curriculum which includes the National Curriculum (NC) subjects: English, Maths, Science, History, Geography, Design Technology (DT), Information/Communication Technology (ICT), Art, Music and PE. Our curriculum also includes Religious Education (RE), Drama and the moral, spiritual, cultural and social elements needed to prepare the children for responsible and active citizenship (Personal, Social, Health Education and Education (PSHCE). We put a lot of emphasis on developing thinking, speaking and listening skills in orderto create independent learners.

Some lessons are learnt through topic work and some subjects are studied separately. We ensure that all subjects are allocated an appropriate amount of time in order that we provide the right balance in the curriculum. We connect the children’s learning across subjects wherever we can.

We have a specialist PE teacher to develop the children's games and gymnastic skills and knowledge as well as swimming and athletics. The school organises competitive inter-house events and enters local competitions in various sports. The children are encouraged to develop a team spirit and good sportsmanship. Many of our sporting events take place in the recreation ground adjacent to the school The children in years 3 and 4 have the opportunity to swim at Brentford Fountain Leisure Centre, our local pool. We also have a specialist music teacher who takes classes across the school. In addition, she provides The Curriculum 13 opportunities for children to sing in the choir, play the recorder or play in the school band.

Planning

Work is planned very carefully to ensure that there is continuity and progression in the curriculum. Year groups plan work together in consultation with subject co-ordinators. We keep clear records and evaluate work regularly. We use a balance of class teaching, group work and individual teaching. Children may be grouped within class according to ability or according to the requirements of a particular activity. Some work tasks are designed particularly to encourage the children's collaborative skills and to develop their ability to work as one of a team. We aim to address the needs of all the children in the class by differentiating the activities on offer. We enable individuals to work at their own level by providing challenging activities for the more able children and supporting less able children through strengthening and reinforcing Tasks. The most able children may be withdrawn on occasions to work together on a particularly challenging activity.

Record Keeping and Assessment

Over the year staff build up records of what the children have experienced and learnt. The records are used to inform teaching and plan for the next stage of learning. Progress is monitored through annual standardised testing in English and maths and against the requirements of the National Curriculum. Samples of children's work are built up in Record of Achievement Books which go home once a term so that you can see, and comment on, your child’s progress. The book goes through the school with your child as a permanent record of his/her development through years 3 to 6.

A record of our SATs results for July 2004 follows in Appendix C (see prospectus).

Reporting to Parents/Carers

Parents/carers are also kept informed of their children's progress at Parent Consultation evenings. In the summer term teachers write a personal report on each child's work and achievementsand targets are suggested for the following year. Both you and your child are invited to comment on the progress.

Our Curriculum Framework is printed overleaf and shows what is taught during the four years that children are with us (subject to amendment as necessary). The policies and schemes of work which are in place to support this are available for viewing on request.
