A Year at Strand
Preparing Soup for the Harvest Supper
During the year, children enjoy a wide range of events that contribute to their learning and enhance their skills. These events contribute to the broad and balanced curriculum which is at the heart of our learning. The year starts with Black History week celebrations in October. Strand has recently been awarded Arts Mark Silver for the second time. This award acknowledges the level of commitment and high standards achieved by the school in all areas of the creative arts (including drama, dance, music and art). The Arts are a particular focus during Black History Week where visiting artists and musicians share their talents, and give the children the opportunity to learn new skills and talents. Some of the activities have been gospel singing, capioera dance, drumming and Classical Indian Dance. Black History week is swiftly followed by the Harvest Supper in which is organised by Year 6 in October. The children research recipes, learn food hygiene skills and prepare the soup which is served to the parents and families who come to the event. They also provide entertainment, each class playing a short piece on the African drums. Finally the children decide upon the charity that will benefit from the funds they have raised from selling tickets and a recipe book containing the recipes of soups they have served.
Ringsfield Hall
As the term draws to an end the Christmas concert is an opportunity for the whole school gather together to perform for our families. The Spring term events include Book Week, during which lots of book related activities are organised including visiting authors, readathons and of course opportunities for dressing up. The first of our Inter House competitions is in February with the Inter House Quiz. The whole school takes part in the preliminary rounds and then teams are chosen to battle it out for the final. The second half of the Spring term sees our residential Journey to Ringsfield Hall in Suffolk. The children spend a week learning to be EarthKeepers and focus on how to look after our environment. On their return they have to share that knowledge with the wider community, running a stall at the Summer Fair selling goods they have made from recycled materials.
