Mayor Opens Clock
Strand Centenary Celebrations Start With a Visit From The Mayor
It is a hundred years since Strand on the Green School opened and today we celebrated the start of our centenary year with a ceremony to open the beautiful, refurbished clock. The old building, which was opened in 1912, originally had a clock on each face of it’s distinctive clock tower but sometime over the last hundred years these fell into disrepair. Last year the Strand on the Green Association and the Friends of Strand Schools funded their refurbishment and now we have magnificent clocks that light up at twilight and throw a welcoming glow over the community. The children have been busy all week writing crackingly creative stories about why the small clock mysteriously stopped at ten past five (more of which on the website which will soon be having a Centenary Section to showcase our centenary celebrations), one of which, Anna in Year 6, was read out in our celebration assembly today. There was also time for a clock face parade where the children showed their fantastic clock face masks/headgear. The assembly finished with a rousing rendition of Rock Around the Clock. Later the School Council had tea with the Mayor, Amrit Mann, complete with a fantastic clock cakes made by Carly Brown, herself an ex Strandite and Mrs Perkins. What a fantastic way to start our Centenary Year – there will soon be a timeline of events on the website – we have got lots more great ideas in store. A huge thank you to Gill Coulton and her Centenary Club who planned the whole event!
